Bourboning – Day 1

Wade and I are taking a few days to explore the Bourbon Trail while our kids are visiting their grandparents. Bourbon is definitely Wade’s thing and not mine (in terms of drinking it), but I find the subject fascinating. Most of the “new” bourbons were released in the fall and he had a lot of fun trying to track them down. In the end it’s a small part luck and a large part of who you know. The prices are fixed so most stores will put the special ones in the back for special people. Some of his stories of being in the right place at the right time or calling every store in a 50 mile radius while on a business trip are hilarious.
We drove to Frankfurt, KY this morning and straight to the Buffalo Trace Distillery.

They are responsible for Blanton’s, E.H. Taylor, W.L. Weller, Van Winkle, Eagle Rare, and many others. Most of the employees have worked there for years and so did their parents. Our tour guide was third generation and had some great stories. His one hour tour lasted three and was fantastic. I highly recommend Freddie as a tour guide if you ever take the Hard Hat Tour.

Every tour ends with a tasting – and a piece of chocolate! (And it turns out you can ruin even chocolate with bourbon.)
