Granny reads bedtime books. (Note the new train book.)
Month: September 2010
Alex timed his morning nap perfectly with breakfast served at the B and B. We saved him our hard boiled eggs and he gobbled them up. Then Pop watched Alex while we loaded the car.
As part of our drive today, we drove over Deception Pass. Of course we had to get out and look around:
Alex spent the morning with Granny and Pop before his first nap. When he woke up we were packed and ready for our drive to Mukilteo, WA and a Vintage Airplane Show.
Crazy enough, the airplane show also had a robotics demonstration. Alex loved playing soccer with a robot:
Then we were back in the car for our ferry crossing to Whidbey Island. Alex loved “driving” the car:
We took the scenic route to the Lovejoy Inn in Coupeville so that Alex could get an afternoon nap.
Then we quickly settled into the carriage house with forts and hugs:

Alex didn’t handle the time change very well and was up and kicking at 4:30 am. Wade took him downstairs to the lobby and let him run around for several hours (and I slept). We all took a long morning nap and were at the airport on time to pick up Judy and Jerry.
We had an afternoon of Seattle tourist sights picked out and started with the Space Needle. Alex seemed indifferent to the view, but was very excited about all of the airplanes (which he called choo choos). He also enjoyed running around the observation deck and took quite a spill. We patched him up and he was off again.

(Alex still calls the airplanes choo choos.)
Today we packed our bags and headed for the airport. We are leaving for Seattle and our nine day vacation. We had to wait a short time in the Milwaukee airport and then had a layover in Minneapolis. Alex handled waiting in the airports like a champ:
Children under the age of two can fly without a ticket – if they sit in their parents’ lap. We went for cheap and had Alex in our lap. Thankfully there was an empty seat on our long flight from Minneapolis to Seattle and we could all stretch out a little. Alex was awesome during both flights. We had tons of snacks, favorite toys, and new choo choos (a big hit). We didn’t even have to turn the DVD player on.
Upon arrival, we gathered up all of our bags and went in search of our rental car. The picture below shows the number of items we needed to travel with an 18 month old (one of the suitcases holds his pack-n-play). It’s about the same number of bags we took on Alex’s first plane trip.
Alex managed two naps before we left Milwaukee (with us waking him up early from his second). He stayed awake and happy for 8.5 hours including both flights. The five minute drive from the airport to our hotel was too much for him. My light sleeper didn’t even move when we took him out of the car seat, up the elevator, laid him on our bed, changed him, and then put him in his bed. (I normally won’t even go up the stairs in our house during nap time for fear of waking him.)
“Choo choo“s were the perfect new toy to keep Alex entertained on a cross-country flight.
