All About Alex

Wade and I weren’t too happy to talk to the doctor today. They have decided it would be best for Alex to have 14 doses of antibiotics (7 days worth) and he will have to stay in the hospital for that. There is nothing specific to indicate an infection, but enough small things that aren’t quite normal. We were looking foward to taking him home, but we’ll just have to wait a little longer for that. Regardless, he is off oxygen and the heat lamp. As of tonight he is even off his IV. Too bad there’s not a way to give him his antibiotics at home.
The good news is that three of Alex’s grandparents arrived today. Judy and Jerry flew in and Mom arrived on the train. Wade picked them all up and brought them straight to the hospital. They have all held Alex and I’m sure plan to do more of the same tomorrow.

  1. Cute pictures! I’m sorry he has to stay a bit longer, but I’m sure it will pay off in the long run! Enjoy the time with your family!

  2. Meghann Donohue

I can totally relate :). Let me warn you, if you haven’t gone home yet, it is SO hard to leave your baby. I handled it ok, and I know he is safe there and growing stronger every day, but I dream of Dru every night and I can’t wait to be able to hold him all day if I want. Is Alex in the NICU or the regular nursery? The NICU nurses here are extremely nice and are very good about being reassuring and allowing us private time with the baby . . .
Let me know if you want to chat about it more. The good news is you definitely know he will be home in 7 days. We are hoping Dru will be home at the beginning of next week. They took the feeding tube out last night, although they may have to put it back in. Still, he is making progress. I would love to send you pictures – what is your e-mail?

  3. Holly, SUCH a bummer! At least you know he’s in good hands.
I’m so glad I got back in touch with you two in time for this! Alex is SO sweet and so tiny. You made it all look so easy, Holly. As I said on Wade’s FB, I’m sure it wasn’t quite as easy as you made it look, but that’s false advertising. I can’t wait to read more about your new lives with the little guy. Congratulations!

  4. Meghann – Alex is in the regular nursery and now has all of his tubes and monitors removed. He basically has to stay to get his medicine twice a day. We only live 1.5 miles from the hospital, but it’s still hard not to have him at home.
Do they have any idea when Dru will be able to come home? Are you going to try to breastfeed? That’s one of the hardest parts right now for me. They want Alex on formula until my milk comes in and they feed him on demand so it is almost impossible for me to always be there and try to nurse and get him to latch.
